Sires
Sires
How do we select a sire at Halcyon?
The macho must be full Huacaya, white, stand out from the crowd and be extreme for certain traits.
  • over 40 follicles per mm²
  • have a follicle growth rate of over 0.30 mm per day.
  • preferably with a primary micron less than 10 micron from the secondary.
  • have good conformation with open face and legs.
  • BIG NUTS!!
  • and most importantly be a stud sire showing extreme advancement on a particular trait that will be useful to our herd

The way that alpaca are selected for the Halcyon stud battery is by their breeding, they need to breed better than themselves and dramatically improve on the hembra they are used over.

A sire of quality does himself out of a job, by breeding superior offspring.

A Halcyon stud macho isn't a namby pamby, sucked up, bow legged, wooly faced, midget that happens to get the nod from one judge or another.

Stud Sires in use at Halcyon

ILR PERUVIAN HEMINGWAY’S PROTÉGÉ
Selected in the US for his VERY high density levels and ability to pass on low primary micron. Sons working in four states of Australia and in the US.

HALCYON VINCENT VAN GOGH
Son of the US sire Caligula. High density and very high growth rate of follicles. Sons working in two states, brothers all across the US.

JOLIMONT GIOVANNI
Exhibiting highly lustrous, soft and silky fleece and has yet to go over 20 micron. Very high density, growth rate and secondary to primary ratio.

MARRIGLEN MARS
One of the first sons of Somerset Accoyo Challenger to come onto the market and available in the eastern states. Deep bold crimping macho with highly aligned thin staples. Has won the Supreme Fleece at the National two years running.

HALCYON ALIANZA ALLORO
Highly aligned deep bold crimp with a rock solid body. Selected in Peru from the Alianza Huarapinya herd from over 400 machos. High fibre growth rate and low primary micron.

NORTHFIELD GULLY ACCOLADE.

An outstanding son of ILR Peruvian Hemingway's Protégé.  Accolade exhibits high density, high length, high secondary to primary follicle ratio, low primary micron and good conformation.  The sign of a true sire is to replace himself and Accolade is a good example of how Protégé has done that."

"Co-owned by Northfield Gully Alpacas ".

Machos in Progeny Testing
Before a macho makes it into the big time at Halcyon we test him out over numerous hembra and assess the results. Yes it takes longer, but it takes a lot of the guess work out of it. These machos are the best up and coming males that we have bred, have passed all our requirements and most importantly have something to offer in our breeding herd.

HALCYON POPOVER

Extreme for density, big frame, open points and cuts a power of usable fleece. A son of Halcyon Humdinger and Grandson of Protégé. Proof that good sires replace themselves.

HALCYON RIPPEROO

Not much you need to say about a macho with primaries at 21.8 micron and secondaries at 15, only that he is a full brother to Halcyon Humdinger.

HALCYON HECTOMETRE
Fantastic skin results with high density, high S/P ratio and high length.  A son of a previous Progeny Test macho, Halcyon Hector.  Just goes to show that each generation can breed better than itself.  Sky is the limit for this macho."
