Alpaca Wethers
Due to the high demand and low supply of white wethers we only take advanced bookings, please download a copy of the booking form and email/fax us with your requirements well in advance.
We will be in touch once we receive it to discuss availability .
One of the side benefits of owning alpaca is their hatred of predators (foxes). They use their size, speed and spitting ability to chase a fox out of their territory. As far as an alpaca is concerned they own the paddock and everything in it. That includes mobs of sheep or goats that run with them. If a fox comes into the paddock they will drive it out of their domain. Over the years, though trial and error we have found that if you put two alpaca out with a mob of 200 ewes/does in around 200 acres you get a dramatic decrease in fox loses. This is based on flat country, if hilly country or bigger mobs and paddocks we introduce a third alpaca. The use of more than three or only one alpaca is not recommended as results if any have varied greatly and usually been less than desirable.
We have also found that wethers fit into the program the best as they settle down readily, their husbandry matches that of the stock they are protecting and their price is affordable to most livestock operations. Entire males should be avoided. Not all wethers are right for the job. We have found that the temperament of the wethers in the pair needs to be right also. An aggressive and submissive paired together appears to work most effectively, resulting in less fighting between themselves and quicker settling in period. The wethers must be mature (two years old), as young wethers don't tend to have the same level of territorial behavior or strength to do the job properly.
